Republicans are facing growing political challenges ahead of the United States midterm elections, as President Donald Trump’s approval rating falls and Democrats gain support in the race for control of Congress.

A Washington Post–ABC News–Ipsos poll published on October 18, 2026, found that Trump’s approval rating had dropped to 33 per cent among US adults, while 66 per cent disapproved of his performance.

The poll also showed Democrats holding an eight-point lead over Republicans in preferences for control of Congress, reflecting growing dissatisfaction among voters over economic conditions and the rising cost of living.

Inflationary pressures, including concerns about fuel prices and everyday expenses, have contributed to public frustration, creating additional challenges for Republican candidates seeking to retain congressional seats.

The findings also suggest that Democrats have gained an advantage in voters’ confidence in their ability to manage the economy, an issue that has become increasingly important as Election Day approaches.

However, polling results reflect voters’ views at the time the survey was conducted and do not determine the final election outcome.

The November midterm elections will decide control of Congress and could influence the direction of the Trump administration’s legislative agenda during the remainder of its term.
