U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has refused to comment on a new report alleging improper conduct by U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle.

Rubio was questioned about the allegations on Thursday in Athens, shortly before leaving Greece. He said he was aware of the report but declined to discuss whether the claims were true.

The report, published by The Wall Street Journal, alleges that Guilfoyle asked a Trump donor to pay a $100,000 credit card bill shortly before her Senate confirmation hearing, reportedly in exchange for access to officials in the Trump administration.

Rubio rejected the idea that he should treat the report as established fact, saying that information from unnamed sources does not automatically make an allegation true.

The Secretary of State had also been questioned about earlier allegations concerning Guilfoyle’s conduct as ambassador. Those reports included claims that she promoted the interests of a Greek company and allowed a lobbyist to participate in private diplomatic meetings.

Guilfoyle has denied wrongdoing, while Rubio has previously defended her performance as ambassador, saying the U.S. Embassy in Athens was doing a good job and describing Guilfoyle as a strong ambassador.

Democratic lawmakers in the United States have called for an investigation into the allegations, but Rubio did not say whether the State Department would open a formal investigation into the latest claims.
