Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Timi Frank, has called on United States President Donald Trump to consider diplomatic measures and targeted sanctions against Nigerian officials found responsible for manipulating the 2027 general elections.

Frank made the appeal in an open letter to Trump titled “No Mandate From Fraud: Election 2027,” urging the US government to consider visa bans, asset freezes and financial restrictions against individuals implicated in electoral malpractice.

The former APC spokesman argued that the United States should engage Nigeria’s political leaders and electoral authorities before the 2027 elections to encourage a free, fair and credible electoral process.

According to Frank, early diplomatic engagement could help discourage electoral manipulation and strengthen public confidence in the country’s democratic institutions.

He also urged the Trump administration to consider sending a high-level delegation to Nigeria and working with European allies to encourage Nigerian authorities to protect the integrity of the elections.

Frank said the proposed sanctions should apply to individuals found responsible for manipulating election results, regardless of their political affiliations or official positions.

He argued that electoral officials, judicial officers and security personnel should be held accountable if evidence establishes that they participated in electoral malpractice.

He also called for scrutiny of the conduct of senior officials within the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies, stressing that those responsible for protecting the electoral process must remain politically neutral.

In his letter, Frank raised concerns about the composition of INEC, alleging that the concentration of individuals from President Bola Tinubu’s ethnic group in key positions could raise questions about the commission’s impartiality.

He argued that public confidence in the electoral umpire was essential to ensuring that Nigerians could freely choose their leaders.

However, these allegations about INEC’s composition and the potential for electoral manipulation have not been independently established by the reports reviewed.

Frank also linked credible elections to accountable leadership, economic development and national stability.

He argued that poor governance and electoral malpractice contribute to the challenges that encourage some Nigerians to seek better opportunities abroad.

According to him, strengthening democratic institutions and improving governance could help address some of the factors influencing migration while encouraging Nigerians in the diaspora to contribute to national development.

Frank urged the United States to make electoral integrity a priority in its diplomatic engagement with Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He maintained that anyone found to have manipulated election results should face individual consequences and that security agencies should protect voters regardless of their political affiliations.

His proposal calls for preventive diplomatic engagement rather than waiting until after the elections to respond to alleged irregularities.

As preparations for the 2027 general elections approach, the conduct of political parties, electoral authorities and security agencies is expected to remain an important issue in discussions about Nigeria’s democratic process.

Frank’s appeal represents his proposal for US diplomatic action. It does not establish that the Trump administration has agreed to impose the proposed sanctions.
