The Federal Government has announced a 30-day discount on petrol sold by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) as part of measures to ease the impact of rising fuel and transportation costs.

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, announced the measure on Thursday, October 8, 2026, during a press briefing in Abuja.

According to Oyedele, the discount will initially give priority to public transport operators nationwide, with the government allowing NNPC to sell petrol at cost during the period.

He stressed that the arrangement should not be regarded as a return to the former petrol subsidy regime.

The Federal Government is also negotiating a ₦1,350-per-litre ceiling on the ex-gantry or landing cost of petrol. The proposed ceiling is intended to reduce sharp fluctuations in fuel prices and will be reviewed periodically.

The government said the measures are aimed at cushioning the effect of high petrol prices on households, businesses and transport users while efforts continue to stabilize the downstream petroleum sector.
