Portugal football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has left the national team’s training camp amid growing tension surrounding his relationship with head coach Jorge Jesus.

The 41-year-old captain announced his departure on September 30, 2026, shortly after Jesus confirmed that Ronaldo would not start Portugal’s UEFA Nations League match against Denmark.

Ronaldo said his decision followed the coach’s press conference and a conversation with Pedro Proença, president of the Portuguese Football Federation.

In a statement shared on social media, Ronaldo said he had decided to leave the national-team camp but added that he would explain the reasons behind his decision to the Portuguese people in due time.

The development came after Ronaldo had reportedly been frustrated by recent decisions concerning his playing time. He did not play in Portugal’s 2–1 victory over Norway and was subsequently left out of the starting lineup for the Denmark match.

Jesus, however, denied that there was a personal feud between him and Ronaldo. The coach said the rules were the same for every player and that team selection remained his responsibility.

The situation has generated widespread speculation in Portugal about whether Ronaldo will continue representing the national team. Portuguese media have questioned whether his departure could mark the end of his international career.

Reports also indicate that Prime Minister Luís Montenegro became involved in the situation and spoke separately with Ronaldo, Jesus and the football federation president. However, there has been no official confirmation that Ronaldo has decided to return to the national team.

Ronaldo remains Portugal’s all-time leading international goalscorer and has repeatedly described his commitment to the national team. Earlier in September, he said he had considered leaving international football but decided to continue playing for Portugal because he believed he could still contribute to the team.

For now, Ronaldo’s next step with Portugal remains uncertain as the football federation and the player consider what happens next.
