Nigeria is celebrating its 66th Independence Anniversary today, October 1, 2026, marking 66 years since the country gained independence from British colonial rule in 1960.

In his Independence Day address to Nigerians, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reflected on the country’s journey since independence and acknowledged the economic difficulties and challenges Nigerians have faced over the years.

The President urged Nigerians to continue believing in the country’s future, saying his administration’s economic reforms were aimed at putting Nigeria on a stronger path toward prosperity.

Tinubu said the country had reached a turning point, arguing that the focus of his administration was now shifting from economic reforms toward “shared and widespread prosperity.”

He outlined his vision of a Nigeria where farmers can produce more efficiently, businesses can grow, young Nigerians can find productive jobs, and families can have better access to affordable food, transportation and education.

The President also called on Nigerians to remain hopeful and united, saying the country’s future depends on the collective efforts of its citizens.

Tinubu’s address comes ahead of the 2027 general elections, in which he is seeking another term in office. His remarks about the country’s economic direction form part of his broader case for continuing the reforms of his administration.

As Nigeria marks 66 years of independence, the President called on citizens to look toward the future with renewed hope and determination.

Happy 66th Independence Anniversary, Nigeria.
